Alt-Country Austin Singer TRASHY ANNIE Takes The Classic Soul Ballad “DRIFT AWAY” Back To Its Country Roots On Her New Single & Video!
Los Angeles, CA - Following up on her exuberant, catchy and totally original single “Born Pretty,” released simultaneously with the announcement about her forthcoming debut full-length album Sticks & Stones, raucous rabble-rousing singer/songwriter Trashy Annie has just released another single and video, showcasing her interpretive talents. Many may not know that soul singer Dobie Gray’s 1973 international smash hit “Drift Away” was actually written years earlier by country songwriter/producer Mentor Williams. The song was originally recorded and released in 1972 by Country Coalition singer John Henry Kurtz but it wasn’t until Gray’s soulful version, produced by Williams, that the song entered into both the charts and the national consciousness.
Now, Trashy Annie and her band of roots rockin’ ne’er-do-wells are taking the song back to its country roots. Annie’s vocals kick things off with just the right amount of Austin twang, backed by a light piano, and then, just when you thought you knew where the song was headed, all hell breaks loose as the band jumps in on the second verse with an uptempo swing that’ll make you kick up your western boot heels! It’s a perfect encapsulation of Trashy Annie’s vibrant sound, which pervades her soon to be released full-length album.
